PSI Continues to Support New Technology Development and Deployment Testing at the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA)

Members of our team have been providing support to Western Area Power Administration since June 2014. Our subject matter experts assist WAPA with performance testing of new technology and physical security equipment. Our team members developed a performance test plan, set up two test beds in 500KV yards, and are conducting performance tests on potential security technology solutions. Our approach ensures that all aspects of the technology and/or equipment being tested will perform as designed by the manufacturer and that the performance of each piece of equipment will meet the requirements established by WAPA.

Performing these tests have allowed WAPA’s management personnel to make informed purchasing decisions, which will lead to cost avoidance or reduction because they understand the capabilities and maintenance of the equipment they are acquiring. Our experts are also currently working with WAPA and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to develop risk assessment tools that will allow WAPA and other utility owners to perform consistent security/risk assessments of their facilities. The tools developed will focus on the North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection (NERC CIP 14) requirements and provide guidance for utility owners to become compliant with these requirements.
